[Dew Process : 2010]Comparisons to Bon Iver are inevitable with Australian singer-songwriter Ernest Ellis and the rich, layered, soaring tunes from Hunting. Ellis delivers rootsy folk tunes with earnest slow-build indie rock in an appealing, easily accessible way; however it is his voice – which delivers the songs with a raw unpolished passion – that carries this stirring debut. Reverb-heavy yearning ballads are met with backyard guitar riffs, and the result? Something akin to your favourite acoustic guitar-wielding pal at house parties mixed with a genuinely talented falsetto-style vocalist. Hunting is an impressive debut with some standout tracks (“Loveless”, “I Am The Beast”) but we’re certain the best is yet to come from this understated talent.
