Hendrix will never not be awesome. If you disagree you’re in the wrong place.
One of the fastest-rising bands of 2009/2010 has been Perth guys Tame Impala. Their heady, vibrating psychedelic grooves and barefoot slacker charm has endeared them to pretty much everyone – kind of like Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix’s basic recipe came from the same book as Tame Impala’s (but with virtuoso wailing and a heap of soul). The first time I heard their tune "Desire Be, Desire Go" the band I thought I was listening to was Dungen.
The Swedish band released their fourth studio album ‘Ta Det Lugnt’ in 2004 and, to our mind, was one of the great records of that year. Taking cues from the late 60s and early 70s acid rock movement, the record was full of big guitars, expansive psych jams, proggy jazz and swirls of flute-infused folk. Like something from another planet (or at least another era) the record takes you through a hazy fuzz and to a mystical blissed-out place that – at that stage - hadn’t been done this side of the new millennium.
The brainchild behind Dungen is Gustav Ejstes, a dude who multitasks as lead singer and multi-instrumentalist of the band and also recorded and mixed the album. The other band members notwithstanding, Ejstes single-handedly wrangled one of the best psych-rock revivals since its heyday in the Sixties.
Ta Det Lugnt translates in English to ‘Take It Easy’ and you’d be hard pressed to find a more appropriate title. Get in the forest, let your hair down and get lost in the primal mix of psychedelia, folk and pop that you’ve more recently found so enamouring about the wonderful Tame Impala. Right on man.
AND in other related news Dungen have just released their 7th album Skit I Allt.
